The Ouborg Award, named after the artist Pieter Ouborg (1893-1956) from The Hague, has been awarded to Marcel van Eeden (The Hague, 1965). This municipal prize for visual arts is given every two years to an artist from The Hague.

The award consists of a sum of money (€ 10.000), the richly illustrated publication entitled N 50 51 40.9 E 3 24 1.3 published by Stroom Den Haag and an exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, where Marcel van Eeden will show his installation Sammlung Boryna (2009).

Marcel van Eeden bases his drawings on source material from before the year of his birth, 1965. He uses existing images that he finds in old magazines, books or newspapers. The subjects range from '50s interiors, cartoons and news items to abstract patterns or texts. A few years ago Van Eeden set out on making various series of narrative drawings, together forming a complex (crime) story. Fact and fiction are continually merged. In these narratives three characters play a recurring role: the botanist Karl McKay Wiegand, the archeologist Oswald Sollmann and the psychiatrist Matheus Boryna. All three of them are lovers and creators of art. In Sammlung Boryna the focus is on Matheus Boryna, a character inspired by the German psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn, who in the 1920s created a collection of artworks of his patients. Prinzhorn was the first person to show an interest in this kind of ‘outsider art'. The installation Sammlung Boryna refers to his collection, but is based on a variety of image sources.

On the occasion of the Ouborg Award Marcel van Eeden wil show his installation Sammlung Boryna (2009) in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. The installation consist of 60 drawings and two sculptures, and is part of the collection of the museum. Van Eeden's relationship with the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag reflects his development as an artist. The museum collection includes a small number of drawings he made for his graduation from the KABK (Royal Academy of Art The Hague) in 1993. These early drawings introduce the audience to the recurring themes in his later works and oeuvre. Van Eeden's first survey exhibition, Retrograde, in the GEM (2003), featured 600 of his drawings.

Jury Ouborg Award 2013
Justin Bennett (artist, faculty member Institute for Sonology, The Hague); Roos van Put (adviser visual arts and performing arts Raad voor Cultuur (Council for Culture) and chairman committee(s) Mondriaan Fund); Marie-José Sondeijker (West); Benno Tempel (director Gemeentemuseum Den Haag); Arno van Roosmalen (director Stroom Den Haag and chairman of the jury).

Chairman of the jury Arno van Roosmalen in the accompanying publication  N 50 51 40.9 E 3 24 1.3:
'In slightly more than two decades, he has managed to realise an impressive and unique body of work; to develop an idiom entirely his own. This has earned him international respect, and - pairing incertitude with a strong work ethic - has enabled him to consistently develop, broaden and deepen his oeuvre. The question was not so much whether Marcel van Eeden would be presented the Ouborg Award, but when. For a number of years now, the artist had been nominated by successive juries - and now, the time has come. The jury feels fully confident that the 2013 Ouborg Award should be presented to Marcel van Eeden - adding a unique new pearl to the string of previous recipients.'
