Esther Jiskoot, 2020

Rijnsdorp Lyceum, Houtrustweg 2, Den Haag

Location: Rijnsdorp Lyceum, Houtrustweg 2, Den Haag

The Rijnsdorp Lyceum building is attached to The International School of The Hague. The school complex is on the outskirts of the city and near the dunes. The students have a mostly international background, coming from other countries with different cultures before arriving in The Hague. Connecting the many different cultures was an important starting point for the art commission. At the same time, the school also wanted something functional; a work of art they could use.

The choice fell on Esther Jiskoot, who with her sculptural objects made of glass and epoxy is not afraid to integrate unusual items into her objects. She designed a bone-like frame for the central arrival hall that floats through the air, so to speak. It acts as a sort of signpost and forms the coat rack for an immense blanket made of thousands of colored glass beads. The structure of the work is both rigid and organic, and in doing so the artist aims to appeal to both the children's rational and creative thinking skills. The quiz question of exactly how many beads the work contains has still not been guessed.

The artwork was created as part of our Art at Schools program. With thanks to the Gemeente of The Hague.
