This event is part of Hybrid Peace by Visual Culture Research Center (Kyiv, Ukraine).

Opening of the finished exhibition Hybrid Peace with the contributions by Yuriy Hrytsyna, Angelina Kariakina, Oleksiy Radynski, Hito Steyerl, Artur Zmijewski. Followed by a screening of the film Glimpse and a lecture by filmmaker Artur Zmijewski (Poland).

Glimpse was shot in the so-called 'Jungles' - the most well-known European refugee camp in Calais, France. Before being dispersed by the French authorities, the 'Jungles' had become a shelter for nearly ten thousand people, almost as if it were a separate city. Surviving in tents and self-made houses, its inhabitants settled into 'neighborhoods' in accordance with the country of their origin - Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, et cetera. Most had survived war, violence, the loss of their families, and dangerous journeys. Before the eviction of the camp, its residents organized themselves in order to defend their temporary home.

The film proposes certain form of presenting immigrants - black and white images, central composition, didactic ways of showing people, long judgmental panoramas, semi-amateur shots and non-professional use of camera, low quality negatives with high contrast and shaking image. This is a conscious replica of the propaganda forms which were present in the movies made by soldiers or political functionaries in Europe in the 1930-50s.

Artur Zmijewski is an artist, filmmaker, curator and publicist. He curated the 7th Berlin Biennial in 2012. In 2005, he represented Poland at the 51st Venice Biennial. He was a participant in documenta 12 (2007) and documenta 14 (2017), Manifesta 5 (2004) and many other international exhibitions.
