Ângela Ferreira is one of Portugal's most engaging contemporary artists. Her presentation at Stroom Den Haag will center around the following issues:

'This presentation of slides will help introduce a series of related art projects and underlying thoughts behind an art practice which attempts to explore the relationship between buildings and their places. The personal reading of these buildings and their histories has served as a starting point for the development of an art discourse focused on geo-political and postcolonial issues pertaining to the relationship between Africa and the western world.'

Over the last twenty years Ângela Ferreira has created an extensive body of work in which she interrogates geo-political, art historical and gender issues related to given cultural contexts. Her installations frequently include sculptures that evoke modernist vocabularies, combined with text, semi-documentary photographs and videos. Born in Mozambique in 1958 (when it was still a Portuguese colony), Ferreira studied in South Africa and has since the early 1990s divided her time between Portugal and South Africa. Her complex background constitutes the root of all her work. Her in-between status, inherent to the identity of many Portuguese, drives her intense exploration of different universes in centers and peripheries, highlighting the importance of perspective.

The Knight's Move
The Knight's Move is a series of lectures by eminent international speakers who stand out by their unusual, enlightening and inspirational visions concerning the city, urbanity, the public domain, and community. Just as the knight moves in an atypical and unusual way across the chessboard, Stroom Den Haag likewise wants to cut across all disciplines and thus stimulate rethinking the city.

Season 2012 of The Knight's Move is made possible in part by the Netherlands Architecture Fund and is a collaboration with the Flemish Architecture Institute.
