Srebrenica is Dutch history

11 July - 23 August 2020
Location: windows Stroom, Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
On view: 24/7 from the street

On 11 July 2020, it is exactly 25 years ago that the Srebrenica genocide took place. In just a few day nationalistic (Bosnian-) Serb (para)militaries killed 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys. At the time, Dutchbat, the Dutch infantry battalion that was part of the United Nations peacekeeping force, was responsible for the protection of the enclave of Srebrenica.
With the national campaign Srebrenica is Dutch history we draw attention to the Srebrenica genocide and its role in Dutch history.

Stroom Den Haag supports this project with a.o. a window presentation, as part of its long-running program See You in The Hague which explores the identity of The Hague as an International City of Peace and Justice through art.

Monument on the Plein
from 11 July 2020
Part of the campaign is a temporary monument on the Plein in The Hague, an initiative of collective Bosnian Girl. 25 portrait photographs of Bosnian Dutch women and men of 25 years old are placed in a circle. With their double identity they symbolize the connection between Dutch and Bosnian history. The portraits were made by photographer Robin de Puy. The portraits form a protective shell around the bereaved families, the survivors of the war in all of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Dutchbatters and others involved.

Srebrenica is Dutch history is an initiative of artist collective Bosnian Girl*, consisting of Arna Mackic, Daria Bukvic, Emina Cerimovic and Ena Sendijarevic, four Bosnian-Dutch women with a background in architecture, theater, research & policy making an cinema respectively. Other contributors to the campaign are: the preparatory committee of the Srebrenica commemoration, International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam and Eastern Neighbours Film Festival.

*The name of the collective refers to the internationally renowned artwork Bosnian Girl by the Bosnian artist Šejla Kameric.
