Bucharest and other cities in Romania had been the scene of dada-like poetry, prose and spectacle in the years before the First World War. One of the leading figures was Tristan Tzara, who coined the term Dada. He went to Zürich during the war, and with a group of Romanian artists and writers he frequented the Cabaret Voltaire where it is said that the Dada movement began in 1916.
