Academic Marcus Maloney will present the lecture Late-stage Capitalism and the Global Rise of Reactionary Masculinities Online, about the cultural and psychological dynamics underlying the rise of anti-feminist and reactionary online 'manosphere'.  The lecture is part of the European SpaceX research programme, of which Stroom is one of the parties.

In this lecture, Dr Marcus Maloney presents multiple projects exploring the socioeconomic, cultural and psychological dynamics underpinning the rise of the male-centred, antifeminist and reactionary online ‘manosphere’. Central is the idea that the reactionary manosphere is but one of many fascism-leaning social phenomena that have emerged as products of an exhausted neoliberal economic system. This system no longer serves the interests of the populations subjected to it – if it ever did. The failure of this globalised economic system, and the increasingly disingenuous ‘liberal consensus’ underpinning it, has given birth to a monstrous ideological shadow, one which threatens to consume the current neoliberal world order and establish itself as the “rough beast” that Yeats foresaw in his famous poem, ‘The Second Coming’.

SpaceX programme

As part of the SpaceX partnership project, Stroom Den Haag presents various lectures and workshops. SpaceX (Spatial Practices in Art and ArChitecture for Empathetic EXchange) is a European, transdisciplinary research network, responding to the disturbing rise of populist nationalism and conflict in European societies by engaging new audiences and forging a culture that embraces diversity, difference, and discursive exchange in cities and urban locations.
