ME, MYSELF & I
Self-Images 300 Years After RembrandtDate: 25 September, 1999 – 9 January 9, 2000
With loans predominantly from Dutch collections, an exhibition was curated featuring the work of seven contemporary international artists: Philip Akkerman, Francesco Clemente, Gilbert & George, Sigurdur Gudmundsson, Sarah Lucas, Bruce Nauman, and Liza May Post. These artists consistently took themselves as the subject of their art. To demonstrate that their self-images were not isolated instances, multiple works by each artist were presented.
Curated by: Arnold Mosselman in collaboration with Stroom.
Sacha Bronwasser in de Volkskrant (September 30, 1999):
“The artists brought together here do not give away their secrets easily. These artists are cool. Cool was also the hit that gave the exhibition its title: ‘Me, Myself & I’ by De La Soul. […] The title is perfectly chosen for the seven interpretations of self-image presented here. The self-portrait seems to have become more of a role-play, in which the artists assign themselves a place. And this role-play is usually not performed in front of a mirror, as was done for centuries, but in front of a camera.”
Organized in the context of the exhibition SELF-PORTRAITS BY REMBRANDT in 1999 at the Mauritshuis.
