Commemoration at the renewed Sinti- and Roma monument
On Monday, 4 May, 2026, starting at 19:15 hrs, a commemoration will be held in memory of the Sinti- and Roma victims of the Second World War. The ceremony will take place at the Sinti- and Roma monument on Vondelstraat. Since 2006, a memorial designed by Jan Verburg has stood here, but this year names have been revised and added. This was done in response to questions from the municipal council. The municipality entered into discussions with those involved, including members of the Roma and Sinti community and the neighborhood committee of the Zeeheldenkwartier. The monument now bears the names of all murdered Sinti- and Roma who were registered in The Hague or were arrested here. In addition, at the request of relatives, more symbolic elements have been incorporated into the monument.
This year’s commemoration program is more extensive than usual. Among others, two Gypsy bands will perform, and Alderman Bruines will give a speech. Everyone is welcome to attend.
