Paper accompanying the theater piece 'Read the newspapers (2013-2014)' by Anna Moreno, a performative reading of opinion pieces on entrepreneurship, funding, and cultural work. The piece was part of Moreno's 'The Barnum Effect' a project series that examined the entanglement of art and economy through the figure of P. T. Barnum, author of The Art of Money Getting (1880). Drawing on the book’s principles for achieving financial success, the series translates Barnum’s advice into the field of art, using it to question value production, immaterial labour, entrepreneurial subjectivity, and the social position of the artist. The project also references the psychological phenomenon known as the Barnum effect, the tendency people have to accept vague and general statements about themselves as accurate and characteristic descriptions, without realizing that those same descriptions apply to almost everyone (see for example the popularity of horoscopes).
