Eleven artists were invited to engage in a dialogue with the Eye Filmmuseum’s collection of approximately 2,000 colonial films, originating from formerly colonized territories in Indonesia and Suriname. The artists explored the ethical questions and possibilities inherent in working with a colonial film archive. The publication Eye(s) Open brings together the perspectives of the eleven artists, alongside artistic and scholarly contributions that respond—in tender, powerful, academic, or poetic ways—to a violent history and its ongoing aftermath.
