Mona Vatamanu and Florin Tudor use the city of Bucharest as raw material for many of their works, their conceptions of the growing democratic field in Romania and the issue of value in the current state of globalized neoliberal capitalism. The engagement of these artists with such distinctive contemporary topics as collective memory, forgetting and erasure, the remnants of fallen regimes and unfamiliarity with recent history places them among the most engaging and educated interpreters of the contemporary post-communist situation, which extends far beyond their homeland of Romania, into the “former West” and further afield. This publication accompanied the exhibition Surplus Value, BAK Utrecht and provided a comprehensive overview of their work, including film, photography, painting, performance and site-specific projects.
