Bente Lange offers the reader the opportunity of getting closer to the unique architecture of the wooden building and the development of the house through the various restaurations and expansions.The book is arranged chronologically and begins with a nuanced of the founding of the artists’ association in 1891 and the success that followed in the first years leading to the erection of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art. The last chapter is called The Future and is written by artist and chairman of Den Frie Jesper Christiansen together with Kirse Junge-Stevnsborg and Malene Natascha Ratcliffe, the directors of the house. They give their vision of the role and challenges Den Frie will have in the coming years as the artists’ house.
