In the photobook Control-Refresh photographer Toma Gerzha documents the lives of young people in Russia. Over the past three years, a Russian passport gave her access to remote cities in Russia. She captured generation Z, living, dreaming, and enjoying themselves while surrounded by war propaganda. The result is a stunning photobook, designed by Rob van Hoesel, published by The Eriskay Connection.

Born in Russia, Gerzha grew up in Amsterdam but was surrounded by her family’s Soviet mentality and traditions. From an early age, she began documenting the differences between these two cultures, meanwhile not feeling fully at home in either. These are difficult times for Russian Gen Z’s. They are afraid to speak out against the war. They see the military propaganda around them and fear being drafted.

Control-Refresh features a variety of photographs, captions, and a timeline of events from Russia’s recent history, documenting the youth in a growing dystopia. The Eriskay Connection has a reputation for publishing meaningful and well-designed photobooks. Rob van Hoesel, publisher and designer of Control-Refresh, will take part in the presentation as well.
