For the first time, Stroom participated in the art fair Art Amsterdam with a solo presentation by Navid Nuur, an artist who exemplifies the current cultural dynamism of The Hague. Behind the city’s formal facade—as the seat of government and host to many international institutions—lies a vibrant art scene and often unregulated underground culture. The number of venues, creative hubs, and artist initiatives is large and flourishing like never before. At the fair, Stroom introduced the magazine ‘DH/’, which illustrates the diversity of this cultural city by the sea.
Navid Nuur (b. 1976, Tehran) lives and works in The Hague. He graduated in 2004 from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and earned his MA in Fine Arts from the University of Plymouth (UK) around the same time. Nuur broke through in 2007, thanks in part to his successful presentation The rise of "RE” at Stroom’s project space on the Toussaintkade.
Earlier this year, he participated in the Armory Show in New York, and after the double presentation at Art Amsterdam, he will have solo exhibitions at Buro Leeuwarden and Galerie PlanB in Berlin. His work is also featured in a group presentation at Liste 08 in Basel, at Kunstverein Medienturm in Graz, and at the Museum of Modern Art Arnhem. At Art Amsterdam, Nuur’s work is on display at two booths: at Stroom (booth no. 117) and Martin van Zomeren (booth no. 30).
In the magazine ‘DH/’, distributed by Stroom at the fair, The Hague is presented as a place for experimentation and diversity—with opportunities and favorable conditions for both national and international artists. A selection of artists, art initiatives, and institutions was made to visually represent the city's cultural diversity. During the fair days, visitors could obtain an autonomous work by Navid Nuur as part of the magazine at the Stroom booth. The booth and the magazine were made possible with the support of the European Regional Development Fund and the Municipality of The Hague (DSO).
