As part of the window presentation In de ogen van het water (In the Eyes of the Water), we invite you to an artist talk by Anne Jesuina.
In their artistic practice, Anne Jesuina explores how we can consciously and collectively engage with emotions from a decolonial and more-than-human perspective. What does emotional responsibility actually mean? And how does it connect to broader forms of eco-social healing and transformation?
The evening begins with a communal meal inspired by Zeeland and Brazilian cuisines, prepared by Brazilian chef ‘Chefe Preta pelo Mundo’: Keyla Marcelino. Keyla is a Black, Brazilian, and queer woman who transforms the kitchen into a space of devotion, ancestral heritage, and celebration.
After an introduction by Thijs Middeldorp, General Director of the Ambassade van de Noordzee (Embassy of the North Sea), Anne Jesuina will present their practice and research. This includes a screening of their short film I Am Not Your Human and an exercise in collective emotional responsibility.
About the framework presentation
In the Eyes of the Water is inspired by the eponymous chapter from the book Duizenden Toekomsten in Zeeland (Thousands of Futures in Zeeland) and emerged from a conversation between researcher-photographer Darko Lagunas and Anne Jesuina. Lagunas invited Jesuina as part of his five-year fieldwork research into Zeeland’s ‘struggle against the water,’ in collaboration with the Embassy of the North Sea.
In the Eyes of the Water is a visual and narrative exploration of the unprocessed legacy of colonialism, slavery, and ecological violence in Zeeland. Jesuina collaborated on this project with Lagunas and artist Zeus Hoenderop, creator of the slavery monument Kom.
The window presentation with audio experience can be seen and experienced from 21 Marc to 31 May, 2026.
