About the (im)possibility of a contemporary monumentPeriod: 1 January 2007 – 27 August 2017
The program 'now monument' is based on the question of the (im)possibility of a contemporary monument. As an institution involved in art and public space, Stroom continuously examines the relationship between developments in contemporary art, society, and the status of public space with a critical eye.
Can contemporary art play a role in creating and maintaining collective consciousness; in remembering, commemorating, or even glorifying people or events? Can it bring communities together?
Can it truly give meaning to the concept of "publicness"? These and other questions are central to Stroom's 'now monument' program.
