FINAL PRESENTATION

Unique workshop by professional artists with youth from the Dutch Caribbean for all Ages in The Hague on the Occasion of the Kingdom Games 2007.
At the invitation of Stroom Den Haag, the Instituto Buena Bista (Curaçao) and the ArteSwa foundation (Netherlands/Curaçao) have jointly developed a proposal for a workshop and final presentation in The Hague during the Kingdom Games. This has resulted in a beautiful and widely supported plan that will be executed as part of the official cultural program of the Kingdom Games.
Visual artists David Bade and Tirzo Martha are bringing four of their students from the Instituto Buena Bista in Curaçao (M.J. Franco Zapata, Kendrick Boelijn, Harvey Davelaar, and Aldino 'Junny' Kuwas) to The Hague to conduct an explosive workshop for the public. The goal of this workshop is, among other things, to raise broader awareness of the Kingdom and the connections within our society by building a new and temporary monument for the Kingdom. The workshop will examine the core values of the monarchy, consider the migrating citizens within the Kingdom, and explore how to translate the conditions for connection into images. A new equestrian statue as a modern version of William II.
Why William II?
King William II played a crucial role in the creation of the Dutch constitution. As a memorial to his important role in establishing the state's political structure, a statue of him was unveiled in 1853 in The Hague. The four allegories incorporated in this statue - The Protector, The Prosperity, The Law, and The Crown—have taken on entirely new meanings in our contemporary society. In 1924, the monument was replaced by an equestrian statue that now stands at the entrance of the Binnenhof. The old statue was donated to the city of Tilburg, a city that, in many ways, can still be seen as 'Willemstad.' Willem II and the capital city serve as the starting point for this workshop, in which the Kingdom is the focus.
Within the structure of the Instituto Buena Bista, artists offer their professional expertise, knowledge, and networks to Antillean youth interested in visual arts. An important goal is to guide them, should they be motivated, toward a full place in the art world. The workshop in The Hague serves as a learning experience for the students and as a way to communicate the visual energy and approach of these Antillean artists to the youth of The Hague.
The ArteSwa Foundation organizes socio-cultural projects in which the arts and imagination are used to give participants a different perspective on current societal issues.
This project is made possible by: Mondriaan Foundation and Fonds 1818.
