Devotionalia: ‘I want five big black limousines, just as black as I am’

Date: 17 April - 31 May 1997

The city plan of The Hague was laid out over the floor of the whole space, outlined in white. Important locations and streets were indicated and the sites that had been visited along the way were marked with a small yellow stencil, that had also been used during the bicycle rides. Some nine monitors were spread on the floor showing the videos made in Brazil, as well as those from Switzerland and The Hague. The three walls of the lower space were completely filled with little wooden shelves that the students had brought in themselves and decorated with objects and photographs. In addition, they each chose a hand or foot made of wax or plaster from large crates which were placed in the middle of the room and brought from Brazil. They each personalized them, neutral or baroque, mysterious or with commitment. They participated fully and felt like artists themselves or at least felt close to art. Almost everyone came to the opening, including their teachers, parents and friends.
