Job Koelewijn

Durée: Three works around the concept of time

Date: 7 October - 24 December 2003

Under the title ‘Durée', the Dutch artist Job Koelewijn (Spakenburg, 1962) made three new works around the concept of ‘time'. The installations ‘Hypnosis 2003' and ‘Untitled', and the video ‘Sur Place'.

Inspired by the movie ‘The Time  Machine' (1960), directed by George Pal, after the novel written by H.G. Wells in 1895, Koelewijn started thinking about the concepts of time and place. The time machine in the film enables people to escape from everyday reality and to travel freely in the past and the future. Koelewijn admires the ability of a film director to create a world which is experienced as real for the duration of a movie.

The installation ‘Hypnosis 2003'  is a shop filled with clocks, which hangs from the ceiling, swinging slowly like a timepiece.
The second installation, ‘Untitled', is a space of 1.30 x 1.30 meters wide and 2.70 meters high. Frequently the shutters of the room roll down, leaving the visitor in complete darkness. When the shutters roll up again, the visitor experiences the space in a totally new way.
The video projection ‘Sur Place' features a cyclist standing motionless on his bike (‘sur place'), seemingly freezing time.
