Gert Dumbar: Gert about Gerd

Date: 4 April 2007, 20:00 hrs
Location: Stroom Den Haag, Hogewal 1-9, The Hague

Gert Dumbar, one of our most renowned graphic designers, will give a lecture as part of the 'After Neurath' event. Dumbar will focus on the work of Gerd Arntz (1900-1988), who was responsible for many of the Isotype designs of Austrian philosopher Otto Neurath. Arntz worked with Neurath and Marie Reidemeister on the development of a new system for pictorial statistics. Together, they fled from Vienna to The Hague in 1934. In 1976, a major retrospective exhibition of Gerd Arntz’s work was held at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. This work has had a significant influence on Dumbar and his contemporaries.

In 1977, Studio Dumbar was founded, now a studio consisting of a team of no less than thirty staff members. Over the years, it has developed a wide variety of styles and won numerous awards. The NS, PTT, Police, and many other (semi-)governmental organizations, as well as companies and cultural institutions, have received a very recognizable visual identity through Studio Dumbar. In 2005, the Royal Dutch Designers Association (BNO) awarded Dumbar honorary membership in recognition of his significant contributions to the design profession. Today, he remains involved with Studio Dumbar as an advisor and is a Design lecturer at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

On the evening of the lecture, it will also be possible to visit the exhibition 'After Neurath: Like sailors on the open sea', featuring works by artists Gerd Arntz, Bureau d'études, Alice Creischer & Andreas Siekmann, Stephan Dillemuth, Chad McCail, Oliver Ressler, and Thomson & Craighead.

The 2007 program of Stroom is made possible in part by the Mondriaan Fund.
