Fortuyn/O’Brien

Ladies in a boat

Date: 8 December 1993 - 12 February 1994

As a result of the study that Fortuyn/O'Brien and Arno Vriends made of the Slachthuisterrein, a large inner court with park behind the enormous housing project by Aldo Rossi, a plan developed that seemed appropriate for an autonomous installation: ‘Ladies in a Boat'. Two enormous ceramic dogs guarded the entrance of the exhibition space like sentinels, there was a fully equipped comfort station for dogs, there were swings, maquettes for the new square as well as other proposals, a film (by Wineke van Muiswinkel) was shown of daily life in the neighborhood, there were objects from the original site and drawings and literature from Berlage, Rossi and others regarding the area. Fortuyn/O'Brien's analysis was a plea from an artist's point of view for an integral contribution to the design and development of urban areas.
