Day of Architecture The Hague 2007

Date: Friday, 22 June, 2007, 18:00–22:00 PM
Guided Tour: Lara Almarcegui

In preparation for and development of new plans, Stroom and SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Space) have joined forces to launch a long-term art and culture program in Scheveningen over the coming years. The project by Lara Almarcegui, along with other activities on the Day of Architecture, marks the beginning of this collaboration. A large number of artists, architects, and designers who live and work in Scheveningen are participating in the initiative.

At 18:00 hrs on the evening before the Day of Architecture, Lara Almarcegui will introduce the Norfolk site as a vacant plot. A space not yet defined, open to imagination, with its own historical, ecological, and spatial qualities. Instead of zooming out - as many architects and urban planners tend to do when exploring the potential of such sites - she zooms in. She reveals the existing qualities hidden between the paving stones, in the walls, in forgotten corners and thickets, thereby opening up the terrain to everyone’s imagination. In a symbolic gesture, she will add six hectares of land to Scheveningen’s public space on Friday evening.

The vacant site is located at the Third Harbor of Scheveningen and covers an area of 6.5 hectares. It stretches from the end of the Verversingskanaal to the dunes between the Kranenburgweg and the Houtrustweg, which form the border with the Duindorp neighborhood. Near the Hellingweg, the site expands eastward to the quay, which runs for 140 meters before ending at the grounds of Rijkswaterstaat.

After the guided tour, visitors are welcome to explore the site independently until 22:00 hrs using a map with information.

The Norfolk site will also be open to the public on the Day of Architecture, Saturday, 23 June 23, from 11:00 hrs to 16:00 PM.
