Culture of Control

Date: 3 October t/m 13 December 2015
Location: Stroom Den Haag, Hogewal 1-9, The Hague and other locations

For ten weeks, Stroom Den Haag focuses on the theme of control: from nudging and self-surveillance to talking fridges and military urbanism. No dystopian scenarios or raised fingers, but a genuine curiosity about a phenomenon that influences our lives and cities in countless ways. Through art, scenography, film, design, and reflection, Culture of Control explores, manipulates, and challenges familiar and unfamiliar control mechanisms. Stroom Den Haag collaborates with a wide range of individuals and organizations for this program, including AFFR, ICX, Platform-Scenography, and Open!

Location: Stroom Den Haag
Central to this period is SHOW MORE, a video installation by Bruno Listopad and Nikola Knežević about self-objectification through online broadcasting. Stroom challenged choreographer Bruno Listopad and architect/artist Nikola Knežević to reflect on the growing influence of control on our personal lives. Rather than presenting individuals as mere victims of surveillance by corporations and governments, Listopad and Knežević show people actively trying to control their own public representation.

The Hague: City Without Walls?

How does control work—specifically, how is it spatially designed into the city? Platform-Scenography applies scenographic thinking to reveal, dismantle, or even reinforce control mechanisms. In late November, the platform hosts a day for designers, scenographers, researchers, and artists in The Hague to analyze the functioning of buildings like Europol and the ICC, and the International Zone as a whole.

Constant Dullaart: Lecture – 'Balconism, neoliberal lulz and resurrected armies'
Location: Stroom Den Haag
Constant Dullaart’s work often addresses changing mechanisms of control in the online world. He uses the internet primarily as an alternative space for presentation and (mis)representation. His politically driven work critiques corporate control over how we perceive the world and how we passively adopt their language. Dullaart will speak about his Balconism Manifesto, which opens with:
“We are all outside on the balcony now. Standing on a platform made out of a tweet into corporate versions of public space.”
