Christiaan Bastiaans (1951):
“The installation is like a long sequence of ‘dream-memories.’ In front of one wall, a new wall was constructed. Parts of this new wall are then uncovered again, and like an archaeologist, the process of searching and revealing continues through these exposed fragments.”
At the Haags Filmhuis, on September 15, his selected films were screened: The Passenger (Professione: Reporter by Michelangelo Antonioni) and Blade Runner (Ridley Scott).
Folded leaflet with texts drawn from sources of inspiration such as Beckett, Bachelard, Deleuze, and Gibson. It also included film stills from The Thing, The Passenger, and Aliens.
The theme of this series was the so-called "undercurrent" of the artwork. Artists were invited to give form to or arrange the background and context of their work. The presentations (over a three-week period) aimed not only to offer insight into the artist’s interests, frames of reference, and sources of inspiration, but also into their way of thinking, searching, selecting, and organizing. At the same time, the series sought to contribute to the discussion around how art is presented — both in terms of conceptual framework and in the form of a spatial, physical "installation."
Each presentation included an evening discussion between the artist and a guest of their choosing, and a folded leaflet was published, which each artist could shape entirely in their own way.
