In this talk, Solati will share her process in making the film installation Traces of Ten Villages for the Beloved Waters exhibition, based on her research into the wetlands of southern Iraq. She will expand on the abstractions, inconsistencies, ruptures, and erasures embedded in the spatial and archival traces surrounding the marshes, and their role in the ongoing environmental injustice and violence that threaten the wetlands and their inhabitants, the Ahwari people.
In addition to confronting these materials, the talk aims to challenge dominant understandings of nature—either as terra nullius to justify its exploitation or as neutral zones of cultural and ecological richness and biodiversity. Instead, the wetlands emerge as a political arena, where traces of desiccation, displacement, return, and resistance are inscribed onto the water, the land, and the spaces in between.
