About Ana María Gómez López
is an artist from Cali, Colombia based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her practice centers on self-experimentation using organic specimens, clinical procedures, and technical instruments, as informed by archival research on histories of science and legacies of utopian thought. First-hand engagement with museums, libraries, and scientific collections are the backbone of her artistic and pedagogical commitments. Recent and upcoming exhibitions featuring her work include the Stedelijk Museum, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, and Deichtorhallen Hamburg – Haus der Photographie. Ana María was a 2025 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow and a 2023/2024 Abigal R. Cohen Fellow at the Columbia University Institute for Ideas and Imagination in Paris. She was a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture, and has held fellowships at the Osler Library for the History of Medicine, Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, the International Institute of Social History, and the Max Planck Institute for History of Science. In 2015, Ana María was the recipient of the Premio Nacional de Artes (National Award in the Arts) in Colombia.
⌀ [dia]
With ⌀ [dia], the artist introduces her layered and sensorial practice where scientific research and artistic imagination intertwine. At the core are ten self-experiments developed by Gómez López or inspired by historical examples. For instance, she undergoes the process of growing a pearl inside her mouth, germinates a seed in her eye, and orients herself - like migratory birds - through earthly magnetic fields. Several of these experiments unfold as works in progress, while others remain unresolved or proved impossible. Together, they form a constellation in which the tension between control and surrender becomes tangible.
