On Sunday 9 February, the artist Aline Thomassen will talk with Alexandra Landré, artistic director of Stroom Den Haag and chair of the Ouborg Award jury, about her work.
Thomassen is the winner of the Ouborg Award 2024, the prestigious art award for visual arts in The Hague. Her exhibition Shape of the Heart is currently on display at Kunstmuseum Den Haag. In Shape of the Heart, an overview of fifteen years of Thomassen's body of work is presented. The conversation will deal with the themes Thomassen explores in her work and her artistic process.
Cruel Tenderness
Aline Thomassen lives and works alternately in the Netherlands and Morocco. Her work is inspired by the countless ways Moroccan women experience and express their identity. She is drawn to the strength and survival instinct she recognizes in the women she meets. In her female figures, Thomassen attempts to capture the complex psychological world of the human experience. The result is watercolors often filled with "cruel tenderness," as Moroccan-Dutch writer Hafid Bouazza beautifully put it. Thomassen's exhibition at Kunstmuseum Den Haag's Project Room offers a striking overview of these monumental fictional portraits over the years. Universal themes such as the female body, motherhood, love, and loss run as a red thread throughout her work.
