Arnold Mosselman

The presentation by Arnold Mosselman (1955) consisted of two parts: a row of figures on transparent foil mounted on the wall, and objects placed on a piece of striped fabric on the floor. The installation as a whole revolved around the central theme of father and son.
The wall piece, Comedians, established a connection between the personal inner world and the public outer world. The four works on the floor revealed themselves directly and soulfully to those personally involved (believer, lover, the deceased), while for any outsider, the view was disrupted by the irritating stripes of the fabric.
Mosselman demonstrated that it is not necessary to choose between inner experience and external facts. In his work, opposing concepts can condense into a single image: hammers wrapped in soft cloths, the other as a split-off part of oneself.
