In terms of art, smallness implies transportability, proximity to the human body, the handmade and a model-likeness that thematizes relationships. Talismans, totems, fetishes, toys, small sculptures were and are very often used close to humans or set up in the living environment. This creates a proximity between object and owner that is unusual for works of art today. Since 1980, every three years the Small Sculpture Triennial presents contemporary sculptures by international artists on 3000m² of exhibition space. The idea of the "Close Up" makes special sense because the oldest known works of art of mankind, the small Ice Age sculptures from the Swabian Alb, created around 40,000 years ago, originate from the vicinity of Fellbach.
