A Fray of Messays gathers a set of interrelated creative practice research inquiries developed by the Deep Futures Research Group at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) The Hague. The group members conduct research that responds to climate catastrophe. This book assembles documentation of, and candid reflections on research carried out between 2021 and 2024. In addition to its aim of sharing alternative imaginaries toward more equitable climate futures, the book also tries to contribute to a meta-discourse on creative practice as a form of knowledge production. Towards a Fray of Messays shows how a defiantly even-more-unpolished variant of the essay might be used to activate writing all along the path of an artistic research trajectory. How it might perform as the site of a non-hierarchical convergence of the capacities of making and musing—an open, pluralist, and responsive method-practice—as ‘unsettled’ in its form as it is in its subjectivity. Twemlow proposes the term messay and the verb messaying to signal the meshing of writing as a practice and writing as a material. It is hoped that an elucidation of one instance of how this format-method has been assayed, will contribute to an expanded conception of how and when writing is used in and with artistic and practice-based research.
