Political power uses propaganda. However, due to today's technical possibilities, such as the software program Photoshop, 'the truth' is becoming increasingly difficult to discover. More than sixty years ago, the political message was proclaimed less subtly. In Russia under Stalin, the purges around power were ruthlessly carried through to the image. David King, former journalist for The Sunday Times, has built a collection of Russian photo manipulations from the 1930s onwards. Series of photos show that the images of the murdered people were edited out in such a way that even the memory of them would disappear. Apparently it has always been the case that editing and manipulation of images is used as an instrument to make political power visible in the media.More than a hundred image manipulations from Stalin's Russia were shown in the exhibition space of Stroom (06 - 29 May '99).
