Produced as part of Gavin Wade’s ongoing project 'Strategic Questions, this time working with artist Alec Finlay. 100 Verses for 3 Estates is the answer to “Strategic Questions #26: What is animate?". This project developed by Gavin Wade from the 40 questions written by R. Buckminster Fuller consists of inviting artists to answer the 40 questions through a publication that can take different forms. Here, for the 26th question, the book documents the making of maps of three Birmingham neighborhoods, using the Japanese Renga method, a collective constrained poem which, when it reaches one hundred verses, is called a hyakuin.
