Small publication accompanying the group exhibition ‘The Derailment of the Usual’ with works by Paul Devens, Lis Rhodes and Heba Y. Amin at the Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht (Feb 2 - Aug 28, 2022). With this exhibition, Devens aimed to raise awareness of the way in which architecture, sound and technology influence our experience and perception, as well as politically defining our society. The artworks were meant to challenge the public to look and listen with an open mind to the things we usually take no notice of. Exploitation from the beginning of the industrial age in Maastricht is made audible in a new sound installation by Devens, Folly / The Derailment of the Usual.\ Devens invited two artists with whom he feels a connection and whose work has many points of reference with his own. Lis Rhodes is a celebrated feminist, artist and activist who has engaged with politics throughout her working life, using cinema and sound in doing so. The Egyptian artist Heba Y. Amin creates political and activist work concerning historical events.
