Celebrity. Desire. Seduction. Transgression. Welcome to the pleasure zones of today's entertainment-driven consumer society. Let's Entertain: Life's Guilty Pleasures examines the 'spectacularization' of everyday experience through the twin lenses of contemporary art practice and cultural criticism, and challenges us not to simply renounce entertainment, but to understand how its strategies can be used to tell a different kind of story. The story that unfolds is sweet, amusing, and, like a fairy tale, often cruel. Issued on the occasion of the similar named exhibition, organized by Philippe Vergne for the Walker Art Center Minneapolis 12.02-30.04.2000 and coproduced by the Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, this publication is an exploration in cultural studies rather than an exhibition catalogue. Let's Entertain: Life's Guilty Pleasures provides a larger sociocultural context for the issues raised by the exhibition, and addresses subjects from the philosophy of pleasure to retail architecture, from cyberculture to body modification to contemporary American politics.
