Textbook accompanying the exhibition RAW- Among the Ruins (Marres, Maastricht, March 10 - May 20, 2007), curated by Lisette Smits and Alexis Vaillant. The exhibition reflected different conceptions of ruin and the idea of impermanence in art and art history."We are concerned with ruin as a “contemporary condition.” Today, the obsession with the new is so strong that everything that is new today is, in fact, no longer new at the same time. To put it another way, the new already carries the promise of ruin. With the totally overstrained art market now, you can extend this to art as well. The new is not new for so long. We have called that “the acceleration of history” (Lisette Smits in an interview with Metropolis M #1, 2007).
