Regardless of religion, geography or background, throughout human history, we see a strong relationship between food and death. Final Food (Eten als Einde) is a project on food, love, farewells and memories. The stories and images we collect will serve as inspiration for the project. They are collected and, if people want to, shared online with the other participants. On November the 2nd, All Souls' Day, an evening with food, stories, performances and live music will take place on the oldest cemetery in The Hague: Oud Eik en Duinen. It is often called the Père Lachaise of the Netherlands because writers like Louis Couperus and J.J. Voskuil are buried here. The evening is inspired by the Mexican Dia de los Muertos, a ritual in which people visit graves of loved ones with food and drink for the deceased.
OPEN CALL TO PARTICIPATE
Stroom Den Haag collects stories, images, ideas and recollections on 'Final Food', on favorite dishes that you would like for your last supper, on food you would prepare for a deceased loved one, in short about the intimate relationship between food and the end. 'Final Food' is linked to the exhibition 'Living Remains' of the Mexican artist Raul Ortega Ayala that is currently on show at Stroom. In 'Living Remains' Ayala investigates the role that food plays in our daily actions, in rituals, religion and culture.
