This book, the result of research by curator and design historian Domitilla Dardi, opens with a "history in images" of playgrounds: an overview of projects by artists, designers and architects like Vito Acconci, Lina Bo Bardi and Aldo van Eyck, who have tackled the creation of playgrounds over time. Several creators were then asked to imagine new playgrounds for this book: so here are 9 ideas put forward by a. o. Martí Guixé, Parasite 2.0 and Olimpia Zagnoli, who freely interpreted the book's double page as a playground. ‘Playgrounding' also explores the meaning of playgrounds through many images: from the photographs of Stefano Cerio and Fujio Kito to those sourced from digital archives.

With his distinctive playground designs, Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck has left his mark on generations of children in Amsterdam. The Playgrounds and the City is the catalogue of an exhibition, "Ontwerpen voor kinderen, speelplaatsen door Aldo van Eyck", held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, 15 June- 8 September 2002. It is a definitive list of playgrounds created by Aldo van Eyck in Amsterdam between 1947 and 1978, along with maps of the city, colour reproductions of some of van Eyck's original sketches for his revolutionary play equipment (which quickly became adopted across the world), plans of key street layouts demonstrating how play areas could act as social gathering places, facsimiles of letters from tenement dwellers to the Department of Public Works, petitioning for play space, and photographs of children at play, enjoying the freedom of the city.

Between 1935 and 1959, the architecture of childhood was at the centre of architectural discourse in a way that is unique in architectural history. Some of the seminal projects of the period, such as the Secondary Modern School at Hunstanton by Peter and Alison Smithson, Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation at Marseilles, or Aldo van Eyck's playgrounds and orphanage, were designed for children. The Architectures of Childhood situates post-war architecture within the welfare state's project of governing the self, which most intensively targeted the citizen in the making, the children.

Naast zijn (cultuur)historische werken en biografieën heeft taalwetenschapper en sanskritist Johan Huizinga (1872-1945) zich vooral tegen het einde van zijn leven gewijd aan algemeen-culturele beschouwingen.  In het kader van de regeling ‘kunst voor scholen' heeft Kindcentrum Kosmos via Stroom Den Haag beeldend kunstenaar Merijn Bolink uitgenodigd een aantal kunstwerken voor de school te maken. Bolink heeft daarop de leerlingen in een aantal workshops gevraagd na te denken over abstracte begrippen zoals taal, rekenen, religie en de natuur. Hans van Bentem werd gevraagd om een kunstwerk te maken voor de nieuwbouw waarbij de hindoe-filosofische identiteit van de school zou worden benadrukt. Hij ontwierp tien beelden, die de tien incarnaties van Vishnu op een eigentijdse manier verbeelden. ‘Telkens als de spirituele wereld in gevaar is, komt Vishnu in één van zijn vele gedaantes op aarde om deze te redden....' Alle werken, uitgevoerd in diverse technieken en materialen, zijn afgebeeld op deze poster, ontworpen door Ben Faydherbe en Wout de Vringer.

Het bestaat uit een serie kunstwerken die exclusief voor de bewoners van deze wijk zijn gemaakt. Voor het project zijn verscheidene kunstenaars uitgenodigd een werk te ontwerpen. Ieder werk is gemaakt in oplage; bewoners konden een werk kiezen. Deze publicatie is onderdeel van het project van Ingrid Mol. ‘De vogelclub' bestaat uit een serie van 36 verschillende vogelhoofden en het  boek. De hoofden zijn van keramiek en zo'n 40 centimeter hoog. In het boek, dat ook aan alle deelnemers is gegeven, staan afbeeldingen van de vogels en verhalen over de vogelclub.
