Stroom Bibliotheeksessies: Arianne Olthaar

De hoofdgast van de bibliotheeksessie op dinsdag 13 maart 2012 was Arianne Olthaar, waarvan recent een publicatie verschenen is getiteld Luxe 1972-1987 (uitgever Heden, Den Haag). Het boekje bestaat volledig uit foto's van (eens) luxueuze, moderne interieurs van dancings, hotels en stations die Olthaar de laatste vier jaar maakte tijdens haar reizen door Midden en Oost Europa.

Arianne Olthaar (1970) maakt experimentele films, foto's en miniatuur modellen. Een belangrijk uitgangspunt voor haar recente werk is haar fascinatie voor de tijdgebondenheid van idealen en design uit de jaren 70 en 80, vooral in het voormalig Oostblok. De focus ligt op interieurs van publieke gebouwen die een nadrukkelijk moderne luxe uitademden. Tegenwoordig hebben zij een aura van vergane glorie en worden ze in toenemende mate bedreigt met renovatie en sloop.

Het illusionaire rijk van tijdloosheid en Oostblok-luxe dat Arianne Olthaar in haar werk probeert vast te houden voor de toekomst, was naast de boeken en films die haar inspireren het onderwerp van gesprek tijdens deze sessie. Ook kwam haar fascinatie voor treinen en treininterieurs ter sprake.

The Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers undertook a laborious trek through the Balkans in order to photograph a series of these mysterious objects. He captures the Spomeniks in the misty mountain landscape at sundown. Looking at the photographs one must admit to a certain embarrassment. We see the powerful beauty of the monumental sculptures and we catch ourselves forgetting the victims in whose name they were built. This is in no way a reproach to the photographer, but rather attests to the strength of the images. After all, Kempenaers did not set out as a documentary photographer, but first and foremost as an artist seeking to create a new image. An image so powerful that it engulfs the viewer. He allows the viewer to enjoy the melancholy beauty of the Spomeniks, but in so doing, forces us to take a position on a social issue. Willem Jan Neutelings.

The abstract films of Bart Vegter

Bart Vegter lived and worked in Rotterdam. He made his first film in 1981, after participating in the Cineworkshop of the Vrije Academie in the Hague. Actually an autodidact, he was inspired by the attitudes and works of Frans Zwartjes, Paul de Mol and Jacques Verbeek, also by seeing experimental films there (mainly from USA), and he met many other motivated students in that place. In 1990 he started using self-written computerprograms to generate his films.
