SURVEY OF PERFORMANCES
Saturday 8 December 2012
(a few performances have specific times and locations. Please check below).

On various locations in The Hague, there will be performances related to and inspired by both recent and historical performances by a.o. Francis Alÿs and Vito Acconi. The actions take place in the city space and interact with it. When you walk through the city on this day, you could be followed, or maybe you will see a huge arrow flying by, people walking backwards, a boy falling into a canal, or people casually polishing the street.

- FOLLOWING PIECE

- A LINE MADE BY WALKING
by Ewelina Niedziella - dowload pdf
(duration 10 min.)
A reenactment of a Richard Long work from 1967
Walking back and forth along a straight line leaving a track on the ground is put here into the urban context which came out of the interest in traces that people leave in the city. The performance will take place in the center of The Hague where the elements of nature grow out of the urban landscape and where the act of walking and leaving the trace underline the movement, pace and visual lines of the space.

- WHERE ARE WE GOING?
by Esther Bentvelsen - download pdf
(duration 10 min.)
A reenactment of  D'ou venons-nous?... (study no. III), by Sigurdur Gudmondsson, 1976
Next to mimicking the movement of the person, it would exaggerate this movement. Not only from the person holding the arrow, but also the passers-by surrounding it. What will happen if you change the context of the arrow, and place it within a multiple audience, in the city of The Hague? Esther Bentvelsen's intention is to create a short, intimate action, where the casual passers-by are unconsciously taking part in the performance.

- BROKEN FALL
by Elejan van der Velde
(duration 10 min.)
A reenactment of Broken Fall (organic) by Bas Jan Ader, 1971
The essence of this performance is about taking risks in a setting that is very common. There are trees and water everywhere. It doesn''t need any extra objects but the body, the tree and the water. It' is also about the tension that' is in the endurance of this piece. How long can Elejan van der Velde hold on to this branch that separates him from falling in the (cold) water? He would like to find a way to translate this tension, this physical and mental experience of the body, into a new setting in The Hague. And it should involve risk, not lethal, but it should also not be safe.

- WASHING/TRACKS/MAINTENANCE
by Annee Grøtte Viken
(duration 60 min.)
A reeanactment of Washing/Tracks/Maintenance by Mierle Laderman Ukeles
The original work was an eight-hour long lasting performance, mirroring the length of a regular working day in the United States. The performance was executed in front of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford and brought forward tasks that are being performed within the museum after opening hours, behind closed doors. The performance arose from ideas Laderman Ukeles developed and which finally became 'Manifesto for maintenance art 1969!' Annee Grøtte Viken got particularly interested in one sentence from her manifesto stating that; "Now, I will simply do these maintenance everyday things, and flush them up to consciousness, exhibit them, as Art." (Manifesto for maintenance art 1969! II, Part One: Personal, Mierle Laderman Ukeles).
By re-enacting the Washing/Tracks/Maintenance performance, Annee Grøtte Viken will focus on the action and the repetition of the work, cleaning the same spot over and over again. It will happen in a pedestrian area in the city centre of The Hague and she will execute it sitting, with a brush. For her, taking this action into the city, being an obstacle, visible, doing something - seemingly being nothing is important; to quote Laderman Ukeles "flush them up to consciousness". Though her work some very existential questions came about and Grøtte Viken thinks today the relevance of these are no less. - How do we value different kind of work in our society? Which are the most important tasks to be taken care of? A simple act being so much.

- LOOKING UP
by Max Royakkers
A reenactment based on a piece by Francis Alÿs
(duration 10 min)
"The wanderer is in no hurry. He comes to halt wherever he is pleased by a view or some other sight, always ready for silent contemplation. Indeed he will even come to halt without any external occasion, merely because he is in deep thought."  Max Royakkers is waiting for a short moment of community. A small timeframe in which a group gathers to stop their daily routine and gaze at the sky. Afterwards they all vanish in anonomity again. We wonder if the wanderer is still part of The Hague? Are we still aware of the beauty of our surroundings and of the people that share public space with us?

- BEZET
by Ryuta Sakaki

A reenactment inspired by 'bezet' by Avi Krispin, 2008
Time: between 13:00-17:00 hrs
Location: Central Station, Winkel Kern
(shopping area city center)
The city is composed of rules. People in the city are unconsciously organised and controled by rules . The lines drawn on the street are typical way of representing the rules as they, for example, indicate the space where cars drive through or stop at. In "bezet" (2008), by Avi Krispin, from The One Minutes Foundation, performers mark off a square with tape around two old sitting men in the same way as Dutch people do for Queen's day. The old men seem to look uneasy because they were suddenly situated in the ‘occupied' space.
For this event, Ryuta Sakaki brings this taping performance into the city of wintery The Hague, and observes how people interpret the abstract squares and react to these impromptu rules.

A reenactment of This Way Brouwn by Stanley Brouwn, 1960
By reenacting This Way Brouwn Lion Zeegers and Julia Retz are interested in how the residents of The Hague trace back areas of the city within their personal experiences. They are able to observe how people relate differently to the same city by asking passersby direction of how to get from one location to another.

BODY MAPPING
by Haruka Uemura - download pdf
Performance of Direct BODY Dialogue inspired by Pina Bausch

Location and times: The Hague city center between 15:00-18:00 hrs
This performance is a research into how ther human body communicates with its surroundings through body movement. Basically, the idea about this performance is walking or dancing in the city, telling a story about personal feelings and at the same time reacting to the existing behaviour, while mapping one's feelings and movement and making a personal dialogue map. For this performance, Haruka Uemura was inspired by Pina Bausch's idea about the movement of human body. She discovered the body as a language or communication tool.
