Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

For Rob Birza (1962) the puppets of Punch and Judy, in Holland known as Jan Klaassen and Katrijn, are just as valuable as the statues of Indian gods or Zadkine's famous monument The Destroyed City in Rotterdam. That is why he merged them into one single image. The golden shine of the metal and the bright colours of the car paint he painted the puppets with, evoke memories of Tibetan statues. Automatically your eyes move from one culture to the other. From one style and one meaning to the other.
