Gijs Assmann, The he and the she and the is of it, 2005

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

They look like clowns, these colourful figures that are standing on their pedestal in a semi upside down position, entangled and intertwined. Their stance looks very uncomfortable. Together they are one, or are they fighting? This way Gijs Assmann (1966) depicts our human shortcomings. For inspiration he looked closely at the monstrous gargoyles from the Middle Ages, contemporary comic books and pornography. In a seductive and grotesque way the sculpture shows how we are in pursuit of happiness, but never seem to achieve it.
