Ernst Hazenbroek, Placebo, 1994

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

Originally this abstract sculpture was a cylinder. A neat cylinder made of thick steel. And then the sculptor Ernst Hazenbroek (1954) worked it with a ‘knife'. He cut the form in half diagonally and expanded it, against all the rules of gravity and the materials. Thus he created a vertical still life. The resistance of the thick steel is plain to see. Even though it fights and squirms on all sides, the artist has succeeded in getting the material under control.
