Sjoerd Buisman, Phyllotaxis Den Haag, 2003

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

This stack of small tree trunks might look very shaky, but it won't tip over. That's because of the principle of phyllotaxis. Around 1980 Sjoerd Buisman (1948) became fascinated with this particular form in nature. In botany the word refers to the arrangement of leaves on a plant stem. With his The Hague 'plant stem' Buisman shows that each new shoot wants to get away from the centre, and go to the top above. And that nature is always finding its own balance.
