Milo Rau (Bern, 1977), sociologist, ex-journalist and director of the International Institute of Political Murder develops a unique mix of documentary, theater and debate. His work is inspired by current affairs, ranging from Russian nationalism to the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and the radicalization of youth in the Western world. Rau looks for the conflict beyond the superficial, for the stories behind the ‘framing'.

Much of his work is presented in the form of a trial: a reenactment and dramatization, always with a role for the personae from the original events. Often his interventions have an impact on the state of affairs themselves. In the press Rau recently has been described as 'the most sought-after' as well as 'the most controversial' director of his generation.

All this, plus his fame as a master storyteller, makes Rau an excellent guest in our The Knight's Move series. Patrick van der Hijden will talk with Rau about fact and fiction surrounding The Hague as the International City of Peace and Justice, about the refugee crisis and about the boundaries between theater and journalism. An evening not to be missed by art and theater lovers, news junkies and idealists (or: rebels with a cause).

The Knight's Move
Over the past five years Stroom Den Haag has organized The Knight's Move: a series of lectures by leading, inspiring and occasionally radical international guests. Great talks for everyone who is interested in the future of the city and the future of The Hague. Enlightening, unsettling and inspiring. For the 2015-2016 season Stroom joins forces with The Hague International Center for Civic Hacks, het Nationale Toneel & Babel, Leiden University and LAPS Amsterdam to widen, sharpen and deepen the way we talk about the city. And to create a place where enthusiastic and curious urban 'doers and thinkers' meet. Between October 2015 and December 2016.

The Knight's Move is made possible in part by the Haagse Bluf Fonds (via Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds) and The City of The Hague.

Milo Rau receives ITI-Prize 2016!
International Theater Institute, Germany

The jury writes:
"Milo Rau stirrs up provocation with his International Institute of Political Murder. He represents a generation that relentlessly reacts to an increasingly radicalized reality. Armed with a referential point of view and a demanding attitude Milo Rau gives theatre and the public a spark to pull global conflict right to the heart of our society."
