Ondertussen: Anne Kranenborg

14 May - 24 June 2016
Location: Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
Open: Monday to Friday: 11-17 hrs; Saturday and Sunday: 12-17 hrs

From 20 September to 20 December 2015 Anne Kranenborg participated in the residency program of Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, Austria. On location she worked on a photographic and material research project about the ‘representation of place', including an affiliated theoretical research project. Her combined research documents present-day Vienna and questions the 'fixes, fluxes and future' of the city.

The photographic research shows Kranenborg's interpretation of the relationship between man and the city, infrastructure and urban profile. Some images redefine the city through abstraction on the basis of its own structure and profile; a profile which is based on repetition, mirroring and symmetry.

The resulting profile has served as a guideline for ceramic research. This second representation of the city uses imagery as a visually defining element. The objects are abstract representations of architectural elements. During her stay in Vienna Kranenborg developed a production method that enables the materials to serve as moulds for one another. This results in twin objects, one made of plaster, one made of porcelain.

For her reflections on the state of the city Anne Kranenborg made use of the publication Liquid Modernity by Zygmunt Bauman. In this book the ‘Liquid' metaphor refers to a continuous state of transformation, in which only the container is fixed, serving as a framework for the ‘liquid'.

The residency of Anne Kraneborg came about on invitation by Kunsthalle Exnergasse, who had requested Stroom to nominate three artists from The Hague for further selection.

Ondertussen
The Ondertussen space links Stroom's exhibition program to its enabling policy for artists. This policy aims to strengthen and improve the visibility of The Hague's artistic climate. Presentations in Ondertussen are usually the result of subsidies provided by Stroom, but can also show the results of mediation by Stroom or of other stimulating activities. The presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the grant applications and the positive effect of our enabling policy for artists. The presentations can vary from (interim) reports of (research) projects and residencies to network presentations. The Ondertussen presentation is the responsibility of the applicant.
