To what extent does colonial history retain a resonance in contemporary Indonesian society?
Indonesia has been independent for 70 years now, after 350 years of domination by the Netherlands. In order to show the way the Indonesian people now relate to their colonial past and give it  a place in contemporary life, photographer Eric Kampherbeek biked along the oldest road on the island of Java: the Jalan Raya Pos or The Great Post Road, built by the Dutch governor-general Herman Willem Daendels in 1808.

The presentation in Ondertussen shows Eric Kampherbeek's search along the Jalan Raya Pos. A journey across deserted landscapes with their hidden history and past colonial buildings that have lost their original function. The journey ends with the ‘Drama Kolosal', large-scale spectacles in which the colonial history is re-enacted and that seem to unite the Indonesians in their nationalism and aversion to the former ruler.

For his project Jalan Raya Pos Eric Kampherbeek received a PRO Kunstprojecten grant in 2015.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (the Dutch word for 'meanwhile').
