15 March t/m 1 June 2014
Location:
window Stroom, Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
Open: visible 24/7 from the street

Part of  See You in The Hague, a multifaceted narrative about the ambitions and reality of The Hague as International City of Peace and Justice.

Stroom Den Haag was involved in the realisation of two very different monuments that are situated on opposite sides of the same street, the President Kennedylaan in the International Zone of The Hague.

Scaffold by Sam Durant
Scaffold, a sculpture by the American artist Sam Durant, is a combination of reconstructed wooden gallows (or scaffolds as they were once called) that were used in executions of significance throughout U.S. history, from abolitionist John Brown in 1859 to Saddam Hussein in 2006. In concurrence with the program See You in The Hague, the work will be literally activated as a platform for discussion about the death penalty, democracy, national administration of justice and international criminal law. A public program will turn Scaffold into a platform for discussion and reflection.
The presence of institutes that are concerned with justice and security were the reason behind the decision of Sam Durant and Stroom Den Haag to build Scaffold in The Hague, in the International Zone of the city.

Mandela Monument by Arie Schippers
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
- Nelson Mandela

The Mandela Monument Long Walk to Freedom by the Dutch sculptor Arie Schippers is standing at the President Kennedylaan in The Hague near Omniversum. On 25 September 2012 Archbishop Desmond Tutu inaugurated this 3,5 meter tall statue. Stroom Den Haag advised in the selection of the artist and acted as a supervisor up and until the sketch phase.
