Christien Rijnsdorp, De Hef (The Lift), 2008

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

It looks like they come from under the ground. Short and heavy, small and vulnerable. That is what the sculptures of Christien Rijnsdorp (1951) look like. Sometimes they are equipped with a trunk or a suction cup. Very often they don't have arms or a head. Even though we do not know these bulb-shaped primitive forms, we immediately recognize them as living creatures. Rijnsdorp's sculptures are born from her wonder about life or about a particular situation. Balance is an important theme in her work. This is also evident from this funny, shaky little tower of three figurines on top of each other.
