Pearl Perlmuter, Schapeman (sheepman), 2001 (1967)

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

Not on his neck, but in front of his body. That is the way shepherds carry their sheep when they are going to wash them. During a holiday on the island of Crete the artist Pearl Perlmuter (1915-2008) saw how shepherds washed their sheep before shaving. This almost ritual immersion inspired her to make this sculpture. You cannot clearly see where the man begins and the animal ends. This sculpture was first cast in bronze in 1967. For The Sculpture Gallery a new cast was made in 2001.
